MINDFUL EATING

It’s important to pay attention to each bite you eat, because if you’re not mindful at the dinner table you’ll miss the entire experience. You won’t taste the flavors if your gaze is stuck on the TV screen instead of on your plate; you’ll miss the delicious aromas wafting from the stove while you’re busy chatting on the phone. Consequently, you’ll remain unsatisfied and hungry after such a meal, so you’ll go back to the kitchen to find something more “fun” to eat—something to lighten your everyday boredom. Mindful eating, however, can mitigate this problem.

Now you will begin to taste, smell, notice, and enjoy your food. You will call on all your senses when you eat for a richer experience. This will leave you content when you put down your knife and fork and swallow the last bite. You’re going to feel satisfied when you finish a meal. Use these mindful eating tips as often as possible, especially when eating at home.

EXERCISE: MINDFUL EATING

Set a beautiful table: Set the table in the kitchen or in the dining room. Include a place mat, a plate, some flatware, a glass, and a napkin. Light a candle to create a harmonious atmosphere. Don’t eat in the living room if you don’t normally eat your meals in there.

Be present: Turn off all electronic devices, and put away anything that might distract you during your meal such as cell phones, newspapers, books, work reports, radio, TV, and computers.

Observe: Serve your meal. Look at the food. Picture that this will actually become part of your body—it’s absolutely fascinating.

Smell: Inhale deeply through your nose to catch all the aromas.

Be grateful: Give thanks to the food for all its nourishment and energy.

Taste: Take a bite and chew it deliberately. Chew every mouthful at least twenty times—your digestive system will thank you. Feel and experience the flavors and textures.

Pause: Put down your fork between bites. Continue to look, smell, and taste your food throughout the meal.
